my sister and i both have gateway desktop computers, essentially the same one though mine has a slightly better processor, but other than that the same one, hers is almost five years old, mine will be 4 years old in february
she just replaced her hard drive a few months ago
now mine is going
meanwhile, an older computer i gave my nephew is still going strong
as is an old laptop i am using that came with xp on it
do you think gateway used cheaper / poorer quality hard drives on theirs?
what is the typical life of a hard drive?
would one in a better computer from an hp or dell maybe last longer??

It's luck of the draw. A hard drive typically lasts about five years. Some give out without warning after two years. Others still work after ten and fifteen years.
It doesn't really matter the brand of computer, though some do use lesser quality parts. But again, even a 10,000 dollar work station can have problems within six months. Once at work we bought a slew of HP Brio computers and out of the ten we bought, six of them failed after a year. The rest to this day are still in use.
For my money I'd go with Dell. But right now I have an HP and am very happy with it.

I have a 2 month old Gateway Desktop PC. All of a sudden 2 or 3 or more times a day I get blue screens.?

There are several possible causes including...
1) Overheating - download MSI afterburner to check your graphics card temperature and RealTemp or HWinfo to check your CPU temperatures. If the computer is only 2 months old you shouldn't have a problem with dust clogging up heatsinks or fans but the thermal paste on the CPU could need replacing.
2) Driver issues - make sure you've installed the latest drivers for your motherboard, components and graphics card.
3) Faulty memory - take all of the memory out, install each module one at a time in your primary memory slot and see if the blue screens keep happening.
4) Faulty hard drive - run CHKDSK from a command prompt to make sure there are no bad sectors on the drive. If there are some of the files for the operating system might not be loading.
Consider backing up any files you may want to keep and reinstalling your operating system and drivers.
