My laptop had a cup of tea dropped on it, I've dried it out but it doesnt work, before I claim on insurance and send it off for inspection I want to take the hard drive out and connect it to my desktop pc so I can recover iTunes music, photos and email adresses etc, can anyone advise if this is possible?
The laptop is a sony vio and has a sata hdd.

Yes, it is very possible, under specific circumstances.
For example, you have said nothing about the make and model of your laptop. Is this important? Of course. Why? Because what equipment you *might* need depends on whether your laptop uses an IDE or a SATA hard drive. Also important is the make and model of your desktop, and for the same exact reason.
SATA hard drives, both the 2.5 inch laptop size and the 3.5 inch desktop size, all use the same exact connections. Thus, a laptop SATA drive can easily be connected to desktop SATA data and power connections. The connectors are universal.
IDE hard drives are different. Laptop IDE hard drives combine the drive power connection into the pins that make up what would appear to be just a data connection, if compared side-by-side to a desktop IDE drive. It is possible to connect a laptop IDE drive into a desktop IDE system, but you would need to purchase a converter.
Now, one option for you, instead of trying to put that laptop drive INTO the desktop, is to put that laptop drive into a USB external enclosure.

Hello! i finally figured out what i'd like for christmas! i wanna replace my 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hardrive with a 500GB 7200RPM SATA in my gateway laptop (purchased it last christmas) do u know if it will work??? wat type should i get?? is 500GB a good choice! anything i need to know so that it dont (blank) up my pc

I currently use an Western Digital external hard drive
(My Book , 1 TB) and it works fine with my Gateway notebook. If you're still considering laptop hard drive choices I'd suggest getting an external hard drive instead---you don't have to go through the hassle of finding compatible drives, its easy to setup and very portable ( works in the same fashion as USB drive).
For your other question whether 500 GBs is enough space?
I use a 1 TB hard drive( which is equal to 1000 GB) because I have thousands of music and video files, plus I want room for growth. My opinion is that 500 GBs is sufficient unless you plan to put tons of video, pictures, music and etc.on it. A hard drive's storage capacity depends upon what files you put on it ( like something small like an avatar or gif images or something large like high resolution photos and movies) and it also depends on how many of those files you plan to put on it (60 mp3 files vs. over 100 half hour tv shows).
You can also contact Gateway for more info about recommended upgrades/downloads based on your
laptop's operating system and product model.
