Is it possible to replace a desktop hard drive with a laptop hard drive?

Dani

My desktop hard drive failed and is not in computer heaven. :( But I have a laptop that is unable to charge but the hard drive is perfectly fine. Is it possible to take the laptop hard drive and put inside the desktop? Obviously I wouldn't be able to do it, but could a technician do it?

Answer
Typically a laptop hard drive will not be compatible with a desktop computer. If it WAS compatible, and you could get a technician to mount it, then yes, you could.

But in generally, you will not be able to do this.

how do i replace my desktop's fried hard drive? and what kind of hard drive do i need?

hmmmm.....

ok so last summer my dell desktop crashed after 7 1/2 years. i think i figured out when trying to reinstall windows that the hard drive just died on us [when i went to choose the memory to use to install windows onto, i chose the hard drive the hard drive was all corrupt and wouldn't install and then the option to use it just disappeared]

and i want to fix that computer, partially for the fact that i just want to know how to do it :P

but the problem is, i'm much more knowledgable about things like programs and internet stuff and such, i really don't deal with working on the hardware of computers alot....so i'm a little clueless on how to replace the hard drive.....

i know i need to buy a new hard drive, but i also think i know theres different types of hard drives that different computers take different types of hard drives {sata, ultra ata, etc.) right?

i can get the old computer to boot up to a screen that will tell me about some of it's specs. at one point it says:

Fixed Disk0: ST340016A
(Utra DMA Mode ATA/100)

does that have anything to do with my hard drive like i think it might? if so, what?

and would this hard drive wprk to replace it? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136457 [[if it matters i think the original hard drive was only 40gb]]

and if anyone could tell me how to replace the hard drive, or give me a link to a good site that will tell me how rip out the old hard drive and put the new one in, i would appreciate it so much!

I PROMISE I'LL PICK A BEST ANSWER!!!!! :DDDDDD

thanks a bunch to anyone whose willing to help me!
the specific model is a dell dimension 4400 :]

Answer
Your original hard drive was a Seagate...40GB are not available but here is a drop in replacement...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148236
You can use any brand as long as its an IDE drive. Replacing it is just a matter of removing the old drive and putting in the new one...just be sure to get the original cables placed exactly the way they came off the old drive. you then have to install your OS...then your Drivers...then your programs...then your saved data..in that order. Its not difficult...just time consuming...and sometimes frustrating!
