Answer
External hard drives can not be used to store game saves or downloads from Xbox LIVE (updates, game demos, or game add-on)
For game saves, updates, demos and game add-ons, you have to buy the Xbox 360 Hard Drives⢠that are sold by Microsoft. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360harddrive120GB/default.htm
Bill Gates and Company have programmed the Xbox 360 to lock the USB ports as "read only", so you can only use external USB hard drives as media storage device for Music and Videos. Even stuff that you download from Xbox LIVE and into the Xbox 360 Hard Drive⢠can not be transferred to the external hard drive, and likewise you can not transfer videos or mp3 or any files from the external hard drive to the Xbox 360 Hard Driveâ¢.

Why is my Xbox 360 not detecting my external hard drive?

I formatted my external hard drive to FAT32 and plugged the USB into the port on the back of my 360 but it doesn't show up under "Memory" when i turn on the system. I'm hoping i'm missing something simple...Please Help! Thanks in advance!
I'm not trying to save anything to the external hard drive. I'm wanting to hook it up so that i can view movies that are saved on the drive. i know it can be done....i just don't know why it's not working for me.
Answer
It's because the 360 will not detect it as a writable device when plugged into the USB port. Formatting it won't help. It can only read it from the USB. A save device must be plugged into the hard drive or memory card slot to save. The only thing you can do is open a 360 hard drive and add a larger drive to it. Even then, it can get corrupted and not work. Just buy the 360 hard drive. You'll waste more time and money trying to get that external to work than if you were to just buy a 360 drive.
Edit: Well if you're just trying to stream, it's not going to be listed in the memory section. That's why I was confused about your question. Some people think you can use it as a storage device for games. It will be listed in your Video Library.
