Hard drive adapter cable question?

GenesisHel

Hi guys. I am looking to buy "USB 2.0 to IDE SATA S-ATA 2.5 3.5 HD HDD Adapter Cable" on ebay and I'm wondering if it will be able to do the job I intend for it to do. Basically I need to hook up my desktop Samsung hard drive to a laptop's USB port and access the hard drive through the laptop so I can then put it's contents on a flash drive and transfer it's data over to my new hard drive.

The hard drive has windows 7 ultimate on it and I am also wondering if it will work on a normal windows 7 operating system which the laptop will have.

Hi,

Personally I would use an external usb caddy as you will surely still need to power the sata drive somehow?

They are very cheap on Ebay and will do what you want easily.

USB hard drive to ATA desktop drive?

I have found an IBM portable 40gb USB 2.0 Hard Disk Drive. I have already removed the hard drive inside. It is a Fujitsu MHT2040AT. I have already bought an adapter to connect this drive to my computer, but for some reason, the BIOS System Setup recognizes it as "Unknown Drive" and i can't do anything with it. ¿How do i make the drive usable??
I currently have 2 other hard drives in my computer, one SATA and one IDE. I want to use this drive for Vista

Answer
If the bios isn't detecting it, then it may have issues (assuming you have cabled it up properly.

If repeatedly trying to get it to detect doesn't work, try forcing the settings in (specify to the bios the number of heads/cylinders/etc), and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, try the Clear ESCD setting in the bios, and reboot.

If that doesn't work, put it back in the usb case and use it as a usb drive :)
