And the standard desktop HDD is 3.5 inches.
But how large is a standard desktop CD/ DVD drive (in inches of course)?
Also, how is this measured?
Hard-drives are measured by the size of the platters, are CD/ DVD drives measured by the size of the drive tray (which holds the CD/ DVD)?

the sizes of desktop hard drives and cd/dvd drives are named for the equivalent size floppy drive that fit that same mounting set up. so a 3.5" hard drive is the same physical size as a 3.5" floppy drive and a CD/DVD drive is the same physical size as a 5.25" floppy drive, even tho 5.25" floppies are not made any more, when the standard for laptop hard drives was designed they just picked a size 1" smaller to call it. there were also 5.25" hard drives years ago and 8" floppy drives as well.

What's the difference between desktop and notebook external hard drives?

Hi guys,
I'm in the market for an external hard drive for my laptop. Sometimes I see really good deals (i.e., a lot of space for not much money) on so-called "desktop" external hard drives, however. I did a little digging and found the difference between desktop and notebook external hard drives is that the desktop variety is 3.5", while the notebook variety is 2.5". But is that the only difference? Would I really be paying all that extra money for just one less inch? Is there some reason I couldn't use a desktop external hard drive with my laptop? Thanks!

If you are looking for an external hard drive -- that connects via USB, Firewire or eSATA the only issue would be the connectivity on your laptop.
The difference in size is only for internal hard drives. And, if you are looking for an internal hard drive for your laptop -- that 1" makes a BIG difference!
