I am trying to find a new hard drive for my desktop. It is an older computer and it has a 20GB ATA-133 hard drive. I was just wandering if there is a difference between and ATA, SATA, and PATA types of hard drives?

ATA stands for Advanced Technology Attachment. There are 2 types of ATA- SATA and PATA. PATA is usually refered to IDE. Today, most of us refer ATA drives as PATA (IDE) drives.
SATA = Serial ATA
PATA = Parallel ATA.
Technically, SATA and PATA (IDE) are in the same ATA family.
In most cases, ATA is usually referred to IDE or PATA, but usually not SATA.
If your computer has SATA connectors, then you are able to use SATA drives. If not, IDE (PATA or ATA) is your only hope.

This driver came with laptop :: 40GB IDE Toshiba HDD2182 4200RPM 2MB ATA-5 9.5mm MK4021GAS,
my old hard drive has 24 pins on top(w/ one empty space) and 23 pins on the bottom (w/ 2 empty space on the middle and almost at the end),
Does ' Western Digital Scorpio WD800BEVE 80GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive' have same pins or connection as my old hard drive? does it have 9.5mm height?? (what ever that is and if it matter ; )

All IDE drives use the same connectors, cables, etc. If they advertise a hard drive as IDE it can be replaced by any other IDE drive. See the link below for a description of the cable.
Notebook IDE drives are smaller than desktop drives and are not interchangeable. All IDE notebook drives are interchangeable.
Since both the new and old drive are ATA they are interchangeable;however according to the send link it will run at a slower speed since it it ATA-5 not ATA-6.
All of these specs are very confusing and hard to explain. If you buy the new drive from a reputable outlet they should allow a return because it is not the right part. The salesperson should also be ble to pick the correct part. the better online retailers also give presale support and return privelege.
