Just bought Western Digital My Book Elite 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive a week ago and everything was working in top-shape.. The transfer speed was super fast at transferring 8gb files in under just 2 minutes. Now it takes 5-6 hours just to move an 800mb file. I don't understand what happened? I tried everything I could think of to fix this problem but I just don't know. I just recently switched power supplies for my computers because the old one wasn't as reliable so I don't know if this could have any effect on the usb external hard drive's performance. I don't think this is case because I even tried plugging the power adapter directly into a free slot on the wall. Same issue. This only just happened recently and I don't know if its because my wd my book elite is dying prematurely or something else entirely.
My computer's usb hubs are all 2.0 and everything works as normal for my other usbs including a 300gb external portable usb from verbatim. I even tried swapping usb wires to see if that made a difference. Its only happening to the wd my book elite.

Windows isn't reading my External HardDrive?

Bought it ages ago and it stopped working about a year ago. Its 640gb and by a brand called verbatim.
Got loads of pictures of my family etc which i would like therefore i would to fix it, ok so when i plug it in; i get a message from windows saying like it can read that theres a usb drive attached but it can not read it? Is this due to the drivers or the HDD is broken so it just reads it as empty?
The power cable works, as the green light turns on when its plugged in and ive tried many connecting cables and none work . And it makes a noise when turns on which sounds normal and you can here the fan go. so any help would be appreciated.

So whats i was trying to say was it cant read the data on and it cant open or anything but the pc reconizes that a usb has been put in to the pc working or not.

Does the PC recognize your "external HDD" as a storage device? I mean, you do see an icon of a HDD with your external HDD's name under "Devices and Removable Storage" in "My Computer"? Since you don't hear any unusual noise, I don't think the problem has to do with the HDD inside, but it may be with the enclosure.
Here are a few things you can try:
(1) Plug your HDD into the USB port and restart your computer. See if that changes anything.
(2) Try it on another computer.
(3) Is there a "hardware reset" button on your external HDD? If so, use a pencil, push down that little red button (which is normally on the back) and hold it for 30 seconds, and then let go. Give it some time to restart.
(4) Run a "disk check" of your external HDD: Go to "My Computer" on your desktop ⺠right-click on your external HDD, which would be under "Devices and Removable Storage" ⺠Properties ⺠go to "Tools" tab ⺠click on "Check now..." under "Error-checking" ⺠check mark both boxes ⺠click "Start".
(5) Was there any software that came with your HDD? Maybe you can go on Verbatim's website, find your particular HDD and see if there are any updates. There could be a diagnostic tool or firmware update, etc. If you plan to update your firmware, make sure not to interrupt the process, because your external HDD may stop working.
If you made it work, then I suggest that you copy all those files onto your computer. Then, purchase another external HDD from Western Digital or Seagate and transfer everything over to that.

The only option you have is to open up your external HDD enclosure ⺠remove the HDD inside ⺠connect that to your computer via "IDE/SATA to USB adaptor" ⺠backup your files.
