What is a External Hard Drive good for?

Im looking at buying a 3TB external hard drive. Ill link it in the bottom. I really need the space on my computer, so I can keep my stuff seperate from my dads. But will this be able to do everything I want? Im looking to be able to plug it into my USB and be able to download all my files and games onto there and run them on my PC with the files residing on there. Is that possible, or do I want something else?

You can download and store your data and install files for your games but most games need to be installed to the drive with the OS.

what is the difference between a Western Digital 'My Book',
and an Iomega External Hard Drive?
i currently have an iomega 1tb hard drive and its full, im looking to buy another.

Nothing, they are both external hard drives, My Book is only the name Western Digital gives their hard drives, and it comes with some management software for the drive.

However, they both can be used the same way.
