how do i change hard drive of desktop?

Billy

i use dell dimension 5100 with 80gb hard drive. and its gettin full.
i deleted everything that i don't use, but there arent that much differences

hard drivers r pretty cheap nowdays, so i think i should buy new one

lets say i bought one, and how do i change it, and transfer all data in my old hard drive?
oh, and i heard there are 'external' hard drives. isn't that bad, since it can b damaged easily?

Answer
Open your case, find your hard drive, look at the cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard, if it is thin (1.5 cm maybe) it is SATA. If it is a ribbon cable that is like 2 inches wide, it is IDE. Go to newegg.com and buy an new one with more space. Under interface choose SATA or IDE.

Remove the hard drive, save the screws, install the new one

Connecting a IDE Desktop Pc Hard drive to a dell inspiron 2200.?

Twiggy

I have a 80gb hard drive that i saved from my old desktop and i wanna get my pics off of it. I wanna find a way to connect it to my rather old Dell Inspiron 2200. I have the belt looking hookup that comes from the internal hard drive. Idk if it matters but here are the specs,

7200 Rpm
Ata 100
8mb BUF.
5VDC
12VDC
Enhanced IDE hard drive
MDL: MD00800-BJBW-RO
Date: 6 APR 2010.
DID: JB00WGA0800AA

I have other cords that were in it i believe. Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Answer
What george has suggested will do but it is a universal one for all types of drive.
You can alteratevly buy an external case from say ebay but make sure that it is for a
3.5" IDE hard drive.
You will need a power adapter (supplied) for +12v to drive the spindle motor. and USB connection
look at http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-3-5-IDE-HARD-DRIVE-ENCLOSURE-HDD-EXTERNAL-CASE-/180484918920?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item2a05bd4e88
assuming you are in usa
