MICHAEL S

My laptop had a cup of tea dropped on it, I've dried it out but it doesnt work, before I claim on insurance and send it off for inspection I want to take the hard drive out and connect it to my desktop pc so I can recover iTunes music, photos and email adresses etc, can anyone advise if this is possible?
The laptop is a sony vio and has a sata hdd.

Answer
Yes, it is very possible, under specific circumstances.

For example, you have said nothing about the make and model of your laptop. Is this important? Of course. Why? Because what equipment you *might* need depends on whether your laptop uses an IDE or a SATA hard drive. Also important is the make and model of your desktop, and for the same exact reason.

SATA hard drives, both the 2.5 inch laptop size and the 3.5 inch desktop size, all use the same exact connections. Thus, a laptop SATA drive can easily be connected to desktop SATA data and power connections. The connectors are universal.

IDE hard drives are different. Laptop IDE hard drives combine the drive power connection into the pins that make up what would appear to be just a data connection, if compared side-by-side to a desktop IDE drive. It is possible to connect a laptop IDE drive into a desktop IDE system, but you would need to purchase a converter.

Now, one option for you, instead of trying to put that laptop drive INTO the desktop, is to put that laptop drive into a USB external enclosure.

If you put your drive into the correct external enclosure, you can now hook that drive up to ANY computer, via the USB port... and access your data that way.

It is just important to know which you have... SATA or IDE. If you turn your laptop over, and remove the hard drive and physically examine it, the label will say whether it is SATA or IDE, and if you examine how it connects to the computer, an IDE drive has two long rows of pins, while a SATA drive has two plastic blades that have copper contacts on them.

end of line

what does mean Desktop Hard Drive?

i want to buy HDD but i don't know what exactly Desktop Hard Drive. i'm not native English speaker and i got confused. is there any difference from Desktop Hard Drive and HDD ?

Answer
HDD = Hard Disk Drive. This tores all your information. There are different type of Hard Drives, some for laptops, others for other items. For desktops there are 3.5" hard drives. There can be some that are faster, (7200 rpm, 10000 rpm) and even SSDs. SSD = Solid State Drive. there are no disks and they are very fast. But expensive. A standard 1TB HDD (TB= 1024GB) is around $100 at 7200 rpm. (standard) But back to your question, HDD stands for Hard disk drive, and a desktop hard drive is a type of HDD, usually 3.5"
