Answer
In short a hard drive is a hard drive, Laptops use a 2.5 inch and desktops use a 3.5 inch, but they make a adapter to use a laptop hard drive in a desktop, but not the other way around. To answer your question yes you can change the hard drives out, but remember all your data, including windows fallows the hard drives. Sometimes windows will work doing that and sometimes it doesnt. If it does you will have to have drivers ready for any windows doesnt have.

What are the hard drive specs for the Compaq Presario S4010CL Desktop Computer?
Jason Quin
My friends family has this model of computer, their hard drive crashed on it so they asked me to remove the hard drive and retrieve the data using an external hard drive enclosure shell. The only problem is that I cannot find any specs on this computer to see what type of enclosure I would need.
Thanks for any information

My question is: If the hard drive has crashed and is dead, why is it suddenly going to start working if you put it in an enclosure or Hard Drive dock? If the Hard drive is truly dead, you would have, at the very least, to replace the controller board on the hard drive. If you don't even know how what kind of external enclosure or dock to get, I did think you will be able to change the controller, which requires special tools.
On the other hand, if you mean, as so often people say hard drive crashed, died, that really the Motherboard fried, power supply failed, or whatever and the hard drive still has some life. In that case, for a old Presario S4010CL, you will need a 3.5 inch IDE enclosure (any brand). You can order them from Tiger Direct or Newegg. Some models can be both IDE and SATA, you need one that IDE, if you get one that is just SATA, you won't be able to use it with that old drive from the Compaq. They cost $15 to $35.
