Sudden out of no where my WD external hard drive stopped working on me.
My Mac wouldn't read it. The LED's on the hard drive didn't turn on. There was no sound coming from it.
So I connected it with another USB cable, tried another power cord, etc. Nothing worked.
I connected it to my other computer, my PC.
It still wouldn't work, but on the bottom corner, it kept popping up that there was something connected to the USB but it failed. Specifically it said
"USB Device Not Recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned...." etc.
So I am assuming that there is some sort of power failure.
If i buy one of those hard drive SATA docks, do you think i could save the files on the hard drive?
Any other suggestions?
I've had it maybe for about 2 years. It's never left the desk or even been moved from its place. I've never had to take it anywhere or move it from the first day i got it. It was working perfectly yesterday until today when somehow nothing worked. No lights or anything.

How long have you had the drive? In this case, it might be a power faliure or a connection got loose. External hard drives may be a little tricky to open up, but if you do; then yes, it is possible to try to connect the drive itself to a SATA dock and plug it into another computer.
If the computer is acknowldging that a device is there but it is simply malfunctioning, then it might be possible to save your drive.

I've been looking at getting an external hard drive but someone has suggested getting a hard drive docking station and a hard drive all I want to do is back up films pictures stuff like that so can I just drag and drop the same with a docking station as you can with an external hard drive?

The following procedure is for docking stations that connect to PC / Mac with any of the following:
- USB 1.x, 2.0, 3.0
- Firewire A or B / Thunderbolt
a> insert disk (HDD / SSD) into the docking station slot
b> plug in and turn on power
c> attach data cable to PC / Mac
d> wait for device to be detected & mounted
e> to disconnect
- (Windows) use the device safe removal icon
- (Mac) drag the device icon from desktop to trash
f> disconnect the data cable & power off the docking station & remove the HDD / SSD from the slot

with the PC / Mac off
a> insert disk (HDD / SSD) into the docking station slot
b> plug in and turn on power
c> attach data cable to PC / Mac
d> power on PC
e> wait for device to be detected & mounted
f> to remove the system must be shut down or restarted
- (shutdown) when shutdown completes, power off the docking station & remove the e-SATA data cable & remove the HDD / SSD
- (restart) when system POST Beep is heard remove the e-SATA data cable & power off the docking station & remove the HDD / SSD
