Record straight to a external hard drive?

I have a western digital passport 160gb external HDD and a western digital my book 300gb HDD. The passport is powered by the computer and has a 5 pin usb port. The my book is powered by an external adapter and has 2 firewire 400 ports a 5 pin usb and a eSATA port. My video camera is a JVC with a 4 pin firewire port and a 5 pin usb port. It uses Mini-DV tapes but can i use one of my hard drives and record directly to it from the camera and not use tapes??

Dumb external hard drives designed for computer mass storage is not enough. There needs to be special firmware. There are external hard drives, but they have more than the hard drive. Check the FS-series Firestore drives at Focus Enhancements.

Is there any laptop computer that supports an eSATA external hard drive?

I am interested in getting the LaCie d2 Quadra external hard drive. I want to take advantage of the speed of the eSATA interface of the LaCie to edit video. Is there any laptop that has this interface?

eSATA is a newer format for external hard drives and its not likely that you can find native eSATA support yet but there are eSATA expansion card in the Cardbus and express card formats available. Check Newegg if you want to add an adapor card to your current PC or wait a little while until the format starts to make its way onto newer laptops. It will likely first show up on high end laptops first and then the lower end as prices for the chips fall.
