New Hard drive (Mac)?

duckfizzle

I just bought a western digital passport external 160g hard drive for my mac. Do i need to install it or do i just plug it in and thats it. If i have it plugged in i have an icon on my desktop but i feel that is to easy. it gives instructions for installing to windows but not mac.

Answer
mac is simply much easier, just plug it and the icon of (firewire/usb drive) will appear, that's it. However for mac commonly the format of the hard disk is os x journaled and windows is FAT 32. In fat 32 u can't save single file which is bigger than 4gb whereas os x journaled can store it and os x journaled is the format u need if u want to make a bootable HD. If ur HD come with fat 32 format and you want it to be os x journaled, just reformat the HD in disk utility and choose os x journaled as the new format.

How to physically remove a hard drive from a Mac desktop?

I have an old Mac desktop computer that can no longer be used and won't even turn on. However, my dad won't let me throw it out/recycle it until I remove the hard drive that apparently has all of my personal information on it. Can someone please tell me how to do that?

Answer
Remove the IDE ribbon cable from the hard drive and you will see
a small screw securing the hard drive mount
to the bottom of the case. Just remove the screw and pull out the hard drive mount
This is after you have opened the casing .
