My laptop hard drive has got errors and now windows can't restart.
What can I do? I really need to save just 3 word documents i've been working on for a few months.
1. Could I start the system on Linux CD somehow? And mount a NTFS drive?
2. Could I plug the hard drive into another computer and copy the data if it's still there? How do I plug a laptop hard drive into an ordinary PC?
3. Is there any other solution?

I have removed many drives and used either an external hard drive case or if it is a newer sata laptop drive it can plug into a desktop just like a normal desktop drive.
If it is an older laptop with an IDE connector you can get an IDE to usb connector which should allow you to plug the drive into a desktop or another laptop.

Now the only thing is if the drive is too far gone it is not going to matter what you do. I am sorry to say there is no easy way to know it is shot until you give it a try.

If you mean a external desktop hard drive as in the large ones that need a separate power supply an portable as in the smaller ones that are powered by only USB then it depends on your use for it.
If you're only going to use it to store stuff and keep them as back-up then an external desktop should be fine. If you're going to use it to store series and movies and you're going to keep moving it around and using it here and there then a portable would be better for its portability but a desktop one would be better as it is easier to cool off. If it bothers you to have a big HDD that needs its own power supply then go for portable. Otherwise, I would recommend a desktop hard drive as it is relatively cheaper, larger, and more efficient (it's cooler, doesn't get as hot as portable ones), Keep in mind a 500GB portable is usually the same price as a 1 TB desktop drive (double the capacity) if not a bit more expensive.
Note: Go for WD if you're to buy a hard disk of either type, they're the best. (WD = Western Digital)
