I wonder if the usb 2.0 speed(480Mbps-57 MB/s)is enough to run games from an external hard drive without affecting the gaming experience(framespersecond or something else in the game).And dont tell me 'firewire is faster',my pc doesnt have firewire slot.I appreciate all ur answers.

As long as it can store the game, it should be able to play it, the FPS is determined by the drive speed, so a 5400rpm, runs slower than a 7200rpm, so a 7200 is better for gaming, the transfer speed is between the drive to the usb to the central computing, so it may lag slightly depending how good of a usb cable you have and how efficient the USB port is, but it's essentially no different than installing a second hard drive, you're just not mounting it.

I mean generally, to what uses most people put their external hard drives to? Can they be used just the same as internal hard drives?

To disagree, you CAN use an external hdd as your main C drive, and it is also NOT any slower then an internal hdd... where are you getting your information from? O.o
External hdds usually come in 2 flavors.
Esata and USB
Esata is just a normal sata port that is either in your case or rear I/O panel in which you can connect a hdd outside your case and get the same speeds, since you are still using the sata interface. Also since its using sata, all computers can natively use it as a boot drive, so you can use it as your main C drive in which you install an OS to.
As for USB, you can get USB 2.0 and 3.0. USB 2.0 is pretty slow and wont work very well as a main boot drive due to the very limited bandwidth. USB 3.0 drives can possibly read/write full speed for mechanical 7200rpm hdds, so they can definitely be a viable option to use as a primary boot drive.
Not all motherboards support booting from an external usb HDD however, but these days most of them will.

They are usually used for portable data (data in which needs to be shared across multiple computers) and/or data which can be used across multiple computers such as media. More often then not they are used as backup drives.

1 backup drive
1 drive just for music, movies, tv shows, and anime
1 for emulators and games
