Q. I recently formatted an external hard drive one one computer but can I use it on a different computer as well? They are both XP O.S. and it formatted fine on the first computer and it doesn't show up on the second one. is it possible to share it on both p.c.'s?

Answer
Yes, both PC's should be able to read the hard drive, assuming both computers can understand the file system you formatted the drive with. Since both computers are XP systems, then they should both be able to read it just fine.

Try plugging the external drive into a different USB port on the computer that doesn't see it. Try one of the ports on the back of the computer. Try booting the PC with the external drive already hooked up and turned on.

Make sure you have an external power supply to the hard drive, as not all USB jacks can supply enough power for all external hard drives. Some USB ports could be malfunctioning and just not within the power specs for the USB standard.

What to do when your hard drive doesn't show up on your computer?

I have a Macbook Pro running on Snow Leopard and a WD My Passport external hard drive. When I attach the hard drive through the USB port, the hard drive lights up and makes a spinning noise inside, but doesn't show up on the desktop or in disk utility/ Is there any way I can check if my hard drive is broken or damaged or some way to make it show up again?

Answer
Is there something wrong with the USB port on your computer? Try the hard drive on a different compute r and see if it recognizes it.
