I have an LG Laptop with 2GB of Ram, that is connected via a firewire hub to a Maxtor 320 external hard drive and an M-Audio Firewire home recording peripheral. They seem to be conflicting to the point where my external hard drive stops communicating with the computer randomly. Any help with resolving these conflicts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,
I am having the same problem here.
I am running a Firewire soundcard (Motu Traveller) and a firewire hardrive ) Maxtor 320. It's very random, sometimes i loose connection with my soundcard when i put the hardrive on.
Othertimes if i am trying to stream some video from the drive and listen to the sound through my soundcard the program freezes- Ive tested this with my internal soundcard and its fine and did the same and tested my built in hardrive and it works fine. There's definitely some conflict here...

What are the chances of an external hard drive crashing?

not really worried about the viruses we never had one.
The external hard drive is a seagate 750gb firewire one. It is about 30gb full.

Answer
For most hard drives the failure rate is about 5% but start to go up depending on age and use, which is the same case for any piece of hardware that has moving parts.
