external hard drive keeps disconnecting image
Q. I have a Iomega 500gb skin external hard drive. I had to format it recently because it went corrupt. It works now but after about ten minutes of it being plugged into my pc (I tested on all ports) it just doesn't show up on the computer. It still runs and the light on it is on but the computer just doesn't respond to it. It does the same on my other computer and my parents.

Sounds like the drive is on the verge of total failure. Better get important files off of it before it's too late!

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that plugs into my windows computer via usb 2.0. What are the positives and the negatives of it keeping it plugged in?

the positives are that you can easily extend your computer's storage, and use it even with a Laptop. So you could watch movies anythere on the beach, in holidays, etc. If your USB hub supports power sharing you could even connect more than one external drive.
The negative side is that with some bad external cases or external drives it could sometime garbage your data.
In no case you should switch off the electricity of your harddrive, even if your PC/Laptop is shutting down- all data needs to be written and verified first. So I suggest if the PC is shut down completely then one minute after you could disconnect it.
Another downside is that USB 2.0 is still slower than an internal harddisk (some with 8MB/s cache) would be.Besides that the electricity is switched off automatically, so you don't need to worry.
Important data can be backed up in three places: online (ftp/file hosting), external harddrive and internal harddrive with a tool like goodsync.
