I want to upgrade from my 40gb hard drive. Would it be better to replace the internal hard drive or to get a external hard drive. I have a dell inspiron 9100 laptop.

Answer
If you're looking for space upgrades - then keep speed upgrades in mind as well.

Your Inspiron 9100 probably only came with a 4200rpm drive in it - or a 5400 at best.

You can easily find 7200rpm drives now with 8MB of cache or more. Regardless of the size you choose - you will be able to read and write data much faster to / from the drive, giving the computer a snappier and new feeling.

You should be able to find a 100gb 7200 rpm drive for under $100.

Programs - including Windows - load much faster on the faster RPM drives. Adding an external is another solution that's going to cost you about as much - but gain more space. However - it is another piece to lug around - and kinda kills the portability.

If you have access to a program such as altiris, or ghost - you can make a perfect copy of your existing drive to the new one, and scale it for the new space being added. Most computer shops will do this for $40 - $50.

Best of luck.

Please recommend a good external hard drive under $50.?

Please recommend for me a good external hard drive that's under $50. I want it to have at least more than 150GB. Thank you.

Answer
Here's a bunch. I'd recommend WD or Hitachi
