I have tons & tons of pictures & music on my current computer. Next week my new computer comes in. I need to remove all pictures, music & other files from my old comp & put them on my new one. Which product would work for me the best?

They are technically the same thing. Both are external hard drives that you plug into your computer; however, an external hard drive is usually bigger like one you would find in a desktop (usually cheaper) and a portable hard drive would be a smaller hard drive like found in a laptop (little more expensive). If you have the money I would get the portable hard drive, takes up less space and if you need to take it some where its a lot easier and lighter! Hope that helps

Two important differences that no one has mentioned:
1) The per TB cost of portable drives are MUCH higher than that of externals
2) Portables rely on the computer to supply the power. Since portables tend to be used with laptops, it's going to draw power from the laptop battery if it isn't plugged in.
