Can you use a portable hard drive as a hard drive in a desktop & if so, how? & if you have tutorials or websites to direct me to, that would be great.

But, here generally the portable hard drives are smaller in size , i mean generally used in laptops.

so, if you want use portable hard disk as normal HDD, you may have to use a converter 2.5 inch to the bigger size connector converter,.

I have files to transfer from my old desktop to my new laptop. I've been told that an external hard drive is the way to go, but is there anything specific I should look for? I know that there is desktop and portable hard drives, but what's the difference and is the desktop movable at all?

When you say 'desktop', I assume you mean internal hard drive (HDD). An internal HDD is what is an external hard drive (portable), with a enclosure pre-fitted. The cheapest option for a portable HDD is a case off eBay and a HDD from a local computer store. The cheapest computer shop in AUS is MSY Computers:

A case off ebay will most likely be 3.5" (rather than laptop, 2.5") with a SATA connection. Any HDD in MSY's list that is 3.5" should do.

So yes, your best option is a portable HDD.
