hp desktop external hard drive image

I used to have a Windows XP operating system on a desktop backing up to my Seagate Freeagent external hard drive. I now have a HP laptop with Windows 8. When I connect the external drive to my laptop (and outlet), the drive letter shows up in device manager; however, when you try to do a backup, the computer cannot find the external drive. suggestions?

Have the computer running and plug it is. Wait a minute and shut down the computer. Once off disconnect the USB Device and boot back up Wait a minute and then plug it back in. If everything is back working again the USB device was left in an open state. This condition affects USB Devices and it can't be trouble shoot ed. It is just one of the quirks and irritations that affect USB Devices. This is not common knowledge. To avoid an Open State condition, aways unplug USB Devices after a computer is shut down.
If this doesn't work there may be some other issue involved.

Why does my external hard drive randomly disconnect?

I have an HP pavilion desktop running windows 7, it has a 500GB internal hard drive. The external hard drive is a 1TB seagate USB hard drive. It works brilliant apart from the fact that now and again it disconnects whilst using virtualbox or defragmenting. I checked disc defragmenter and it said 57% fragmented so I ran defrag and it is all tidy now but can't understand why it disconnects. Any idea why the external Hard Drive disconnects?
thanks
Answer
From what you're saying, it appears that it might be because of the usb cable. I have had the same problem with a few storing devices and it was caused by the malfunctioning cable. However, if this issue only arises while working with specific programs and not any other time, you might want to check out your softwares. There also is a utility for Seagate hard drives that checks for any problems in your hard drive; it should come with it, if not, check out Google or Seagate website.
Hope it helps.
