iMAC to seagate external hard drive to MACBOOK air?

Ok so today I bought a Macbook air along with a external hard drive. My imac at home has all my music on it and wanted to transfer it all to my macbook. When i try to drag it from its root file to the external i get the little no smoking sign when the icon crosses over into the music file on my external hard drive. What am i doing wrong? Keep in mind that the hard drive is formatted for PC and Mac so that part is already done

You cannot format "a" drive for PC and Mac. You can format for one or the other, but not both. You can format one partition / drive for Mac and another partition / drive for PC.

If the drive is formatted NTFS ("PC"), install NTFS-3G. That is a driver for writing to an NTFS drive while using OS X.

I have the 11-inch Macbook Air, which has a very small hard drive (only 64 gigs). Needless to say, that small space filled up pretty quickly, so the other day I bought an external hard drive. Problem is, I'm pretty technologically challenged, so I have no idea how to take files off of my Mac and put them on the external (NOT back them up). If you could walk me through how to do that that'd be great!

In your finder, find the file you want. When the external drive is connected, it should appear in the left of the finder window. Click and drag the file to the drive icon to load it to the drive.
