My computer recently got the hard disk failure is imminent, my question is this, how do I transfer my data from the broken hard drive to an external hard drive or a USB of some sort

You could use a hard drive enclosure which will definitely help you out. Its a fast and simple way to back up files off your hard drive. I would personally suggest you check out the bt-300 from topmicrousa. Works wonders and its ridiculously easy to use. Back up your files, get a new hard drive, recopy, youre good!

My new HP Desktop has an external bay with nothing in it, can I put a hard drive there? If so, how?

A portable media drive? Is there any drives that can just fit in there and plug in or no?
Also, would it be unwise to have one hard drive with both my restore/boot points and media files?

Yes you can install another hard-drive in the desktop housing, just connect the extra power connection from the power supply and connect the data cable to the motherboard. You could just purchase an external hard-drive to use it for portable media, it would just plug into one of your usb ports. Backing up your data to an external drive is recommended to retrieve your file, should your hard-drive ever crash. Keep in mind you will only be able to retrieve files such as photos, documents, videos, favorites and e-mails. You will not be able to retrieve programs such as office, simply accounting, word or windows....unless they are very old versions. So save all your program disks in case you need a new hard-drive.
