I am looking to purchase a portable external hard-drive and I've narrowed it down to two models. The 2.0 hard-drive cost $112 and the 3.0 cost $129. The 3.0 one is supposed to be faster at transferring files. What is really the difference between the two? Is the 3.0 really much faster than the 2.0 or is there hardly a noticeable difference? Is it worth paying the extra money for the 3.0 or is the 2.0 pretty much the same?

The USB 3.0 standard has 10 times the bandwidth of the USB 2.0 standard (4.8 gigabits for 3.0, 480 megabits for 2.0), so theoretically it should be 10 times faster.
Current drives USB 3.0 are only 3 or 4 times faster than USB 2.0, not the theoretical 10 times faster. However, for an extra $17, getting a hard drive that is 3 or 4 times faster is worth it. I'm sure as the standard matures, we will see speeds improve.
USB 3.0 is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports, but only at 2.0 speeds. To use a USB 3.0 hard drive at full speed, you need both a USB 3.0 cable and a USB 3.0 port on your computer. You can purchase a USB 3.0 cable fairly cheaply, and you can add USB 3.0 capability to your computer via a $30 add-on card. However, having to buy this extra stuff might not make it worth the extra money.

I need a external hard drive in order to free up some space on my laptop. I don't have any clue about them, are they all similar but just have different sizes and could you give me all the information i need to know about buying one.

External hard drives are very popular and fortunately selling for good prices now. You can get a 1 TB drive for $100 or less right now at places like: tigerdirect.com or newegg.com.
They are making them much smaller now using 21/2" laptop hard drives instead of larger desktop types. The advantage of the smaller drive is portability - however I have seen many a small hard made useless by the small USB plugin in it getting pushed in.
Sizes for external hard drives range in size from 160 GB - 2TB. You would probably want a 1 TB drive.I personally favor Western Digital.
