i need some advice on selecting external hard drives. i read some reviews of some drives on Frys and best buys and there were some that werent very clear. is it true that an external hard drive cannot transfer its contents to another computer? meaning that if the hard drive with the original files crash you're screwed? and do external hard drives always have a "normal" power source? meaning they are not powered through the usb cord like ipods are? and its natural for a hard drive to somethings lose and corrupt your data rights? the way i see it, i should just burn money on a load of memory sticks to ensure my files are safe and secure? so yea, any help and advice would do likely. and please clear up any of these questions by proving them true or false.

first, get good branded drives like western digital or seagate so that you will have less problems.
1. false. external hard drives can transfer files from one computer to another. that's one of their basic purpose. but you can't install some programs on the external hard drive and expect them to work on another computer. most programs write information on how they are run in your system registry which is often in your internal system disk so running the program in another computer without the registry files may won't work.
2. there are types of external hard drive that can be powered through usb. ask one from your retailer if this is what you are looking for.
3. external hard drives are just like memory sticks or flash drives. losing data or having corrupt data is usually due to mishandling the device or plugging it into an unsecured computer exposing it to flash drive / usb viruses. dropping it also may contribute a lot to damage not only your files but the device itself.

Q. Basically i want to buy a toshiba hard drive (external)
But I heard some hard drives can just break down and memory can be wiped for some rubbish ones
So i want a reliable make and a decent hard drive but i don;t know what to get
I know Western digital and maxtor and freecom are all good makes but they are really expensive
We need a 160Gb hard drive

Personally I'd suggest the Western Digital 160GB Passport for £53, or the 250GB version for £58
your data is important so spend as much as you can, and remember, failure rates are high accross all drives!
