best external hard drives of 2012 image

I have deployment coming up, and would like to rip my DVD's to an external hard drive. Are there any programs on the market that would allow me to do this? I have been looking at various programs, but I do not want to buy one without knowing it will do what I want. I currently have a MacBook that operates on OSX if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

In Apple App Store, form someone recommended, I tried:
Ripit: Tried to convert 2012 dvd to put on SD card. Nothing.... it tells me on pop-up box....Loading-please wait. Well I waited.......and waited and waited and waited. Just sat there all morning still loading????

WinX DVD Ripper Mac Free: not know much about it. With fast speed and high quality, I was only to convert 2012 with the default setting.

The OS for the Mac is OS X Tiger (10.4.6) and I'm downloaded this OS to my Hp Windows 7 laptop and it's in the form of an iso image..How do I proceed?

Which operating system and which computer are you downloading it on?
An external Mac hard drive can be set up as a bootable OSX system drive.
It has to be formatted with GUID partition map, and formatted Mac OS Extended (HFS+) which would be normal for a Mac drive.
You need to have a workable installer, which could be on DVD or in an ISO file.
If you have a Mac machine, you can clone the drive to the external with Carbon Copy Cloner and it will be bootable.
